beak question on zebra finches

laciegsd Aug 12, 2003 05:53 PM

I just rescued 4 Zebra Finches. I have one question. The one male has a beak problem. His beak crosses at the tip. To me, a novice bird owner at best, I think the beak is severly overgrown. I read in a book that you can trim a finches beak with finger nail trimmers, Is this true? If so, how far back.....To the point where they don't cross anymore??? I am just worried that he is going to have eating difficulties here soon, that is if he doesn't already.

You're right. The beak is overgrown. I strongly recommend having an avian vet trim the beak, instead of you doing it with nail trimmers. Please don't delay taking him in for a beak trim, since it will cause eating problems. Also, if he preens his cage mates, that also could be problematic for them.

Thanks for rescuing them. Tell us more about them and post their pictures if you can!

Thank you. I am going to get his beak looked at this week.
