i have a young parakeet. it's old enough to eat birdseed though.My friend at school said i should grit. Is it really that important or can i bypass it? any info would be appreciated.

Grit is not necessary and could even harm your bird. Avoid it entirely. I also suggest giving your bird pellets and fresh veggies instead of seed.
