Can't get zebra finches to breed.

ram Dec 16, 2003 02:36 PM

Hello, I have 1.3 zebras (1 male, 3 females). I have had hem since the summer and when i got them they were 5-6 months old. I have all 3 in a cage together. I have been feeding them well. I placed a finch next (made of straw, it's a covered nest with a little hole in it) in the cage along with a litle box of nesting material. They took the nesting material and spread it all around the cage, but not into the nest. I put some nesting material in the nest to help them make the connection. They haven't showed any interest in the nest and I haven't seen any mating rituals or anything. They seem to be afraid of the nest and haven't gotten into it to check it out yet. How long will it take for my birds to start nesting? Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is that four's a crowd, and they won't breed under those conditions. Also, my experience has been that while they can breed young, they usually aren't experienced enough to care for any babies who hatch.

Does the male show a preference for one of the females? When he does, and the feeling is mutual, I'd put them in a separate cage. It took my finches several attempts to have a successful clutch and when they "grow up" a little, there will be no stopping them!

At this point, they are treating the nesting material as something to play with!
