Housing male canary with other birds.

I have one male canary in a 65"L x 21"W x 33"H aviary. Is it possible to house him with a few female canaries or a small group of finches? I did rescue another canary a couple months ago and he was social to that bird. The other bird would chase him and only then would he defend himself and then fly away. The aviary is dividable. Thanks for your time.
