Keeping Finches and Parakeets together in the same cage!

finksmart Jun 24, 2004 02:25 PM

One day I made a big cage and decided to put the parakeets and zebra finches together. I monitored the group for a few days and to my surprise they seem to like each other just fine! This is probably due to the fact that they are used to each other being in different cages next to each other. The only thing that stood out was when one of the parakeets got curious at the finches and was "investigating" on one of the female zebra(you know how curious they get) when the female, instead of flying away, "defended" herself by lightly pecking in the direction of the parakeets. No physical contact was made. I will continue to monitor them to make sure they are not fighting. But so far they are getting along quite well as you may see in the photo. I was wondering, iss there anyone else that keeps the two types of birds together?

Nice pic, your birds are beautiful! I've kept budgies and zebras together, I was also surprised at how well they did. They essentially ignored each other. I found that I couldn't overcrowd them in any way though -- for instance, couldn't put them in a smaller cage together in order to give the flight cage a spring cleaning. Without space to get away from each other, the keets would nibble the finches' toes and could do some damage, so I put them in seperate cages while cleaning the flight. Just a thought in case you have to do something similar.

Also, I was never able to breed the finches in the flight with the budgies... the budgies would tear apart their nests and even throw out the eggs. I don't breed any of my birds in community flights any more, I was having too many problems like that. They still live in flights when not breeding, I just put them in individual cages for breeding. I feel like they get the best of both worlds that way!

Nice birds.

I have also kept finches and keets together in a large aviary. They all bred in there. I had zebra finches, keets, socioty(sp?)finches, a female sliver bill and a male soc. finch that bred and thier babies, a euroupeon gold finch, cockatiels, button quials, and a house sparrow with a broken wing. They all got along great, even played together. They where alot of fun to watch.
Have fun with your guys and good luck.
