finches using EVERYTHING for there nest!

luvmiburds Jan 29, 2005 12:25 PM

we have 2 female and 1 male finch and 2 nesting baskets, I gave him the artificial nesting material and he put it all in one of the nesting boxes, and then I gave them some alphalfa sprouts for some greens in there diet, and he put that in there too, he tales pieces of the paper on the bottom of the cage and puts all them in the nest. Is this normal or should i take everything that she can put into her nest out? The other question that i have is all 3 zebra finches sleep in the same nest every night together. Is this normal?

Finches will put anything in the nest they can fit in there lol. Ours put a whole millet spray in there one time. It was fun to watch him put it in there though. They can over build the nests to where the eggs fall out so you have to be careful how much you give them. Are you wanting him to breed with both the females? I would not do this as it takes an ENORMOUS amount of energy for them to raise young. If he bred both of them it might kill him trying to keep up with both clutches. I would either separate the female and get her a mate in a different cage, or if your cage is big enough, get 3 more birds. 1 pair to a cage or 3 or more is the general rule.
