My Finches Eggs Hatched!

ZebraFinchowner Feb 06, 2005 04:55 PM

Found one baby dead at their food tray ....The 2nd one is in the nest but it doesn't move much.....and the 3rd eeg hasn't hatched yet. When will the parents start feeding the baby bird? They only lay down on the baby but they don't feed it.....

They should be feeding the baby right away. How closely are you watching them? Could they be feeding when you're not looking? Keep an eye on them and see if they are. If not, you'll need to hand feed the baby. I suggest getting some baby bird formula from your avian vet and asking advice from him/her about hand feeding.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

I just found today the little baby bird and the 3rd bird that just hatched dead.....The parents moved the dead babies aside the nest.I also just discovered two new eggs today. This is getting depresing....I have a feeling like if the parents don't like the babies. But if they don't want them then how come they spend so much time warming the eggs?I'm so confused!

I'm sorry the babies died. In the case of baby birds, I believe the parents know things about them that we don't--like if the baby is sick and won't make it. They probably spend their time with those they know have a better chance of "making it." Nature's ways can seem cruel and heartless, but unfortunately it is the way things are.

Maybe the new eggs will hatch healthy babies. Let's hope so!

Was this their first clutch? Our finches didn't feed their first clutch either. This is a common thing unfortunatly. Sometimes they let the babies die before they figure out they need to feed them. Our finches second clutch they did great and had 4 healthy happy babies. I hope this will be the case with yours. You are feeding them soft foods like hardboiled eggs right?
