Separating chicks from parents

Fighterfish2000 Feb 14, 2005 03:51 PM

I've separated my two seven week old zebra finch chicks from their parents and put them in an aviary with other finches, because the parents have a new clutch of three chicks. The parents seem distressed and I haven't seen them tend to the chicks for a while. I put them next to the aviary and have calmed down a bit but I'm a bit unsure what to do next. I have considered hand-rearing but the last time I hand-reared I lost 2 out of four chicks. Thanks for any replies.

I know this is a late reply, but they are probably stressed from having their clutches so close together. They will breed like mice if you let them. I know as soon as our clutch fledged we had to take the nest out as the parents were already starting to mate again. Once the babies were weaned we separated mom and dad. Mom layed a couple more eggs but then we put the girl babies in with her and she stopped. I hope everything turned out ok.
