zebra finches and Budgies

luvmiburds Feb 14, 2005 08:20 PM

Just out of curiosity, Do budgies and zebra finches get along? We have a "outcast" zebra finch who has no neck feathers, very few tail fethers and a few brest feathers gone. It had seemed that the other Zebras decided to pick, bite, chase into a corner and basiclly made him an outcast from the rest of the heard, Now i don't get rid of any of my birds. So I removed our little "outcast" that's what we've named him, out of the finches avary, and tried him for a few seconds in the Cockatiel cage, Didn't go well, tried the lovebirds, same story, then we tried him in a budgie cage with 6 other budgies and they took to him like a fish to water, they moved over on the perch and made a place for him to sit, right now they are all sleeping on the perch. He has been in there for 6 hours now and hasn't had a problem yet, they are even letting him preen them (where he can reach) I have never seen so many birds accept a diffrent breed so quickly! We have built him a little shelter underneath the ladder to the nest box and have put finch food in there and water as well as some pre-fabricated nesting material to make it like home. Here is a link to a picture of him with 2 of his new found friends: images.ofoto.com/photos1132/8/22/40/53/68/0/68534022806_0_ALB.jpg
You may have to cut and paste as i don't know how to paste a link

You were right to take the little finch out, separating him from the others. Finches can pick on other finches that are low in the pecking order. I've had to separate mine before to stop the harassment.

As to the budgies accepting the finch, I've never heard of that before. But it must be working! I'd keep a sharp eye on them to make sure there's no trouble. The link you posted says I'm forbidden to see it! Can you post the pictures here in our Photo Album?
