Saffron Finches and Green Singers

rowanwood Feb 26, 2005 07:35 PM

I just adopted 2 of each of these (or so I think, not completely sure on the saffron -- the rescue wasn't sure what they were) The "saffrons" appear to both be male and I have no idea about the singers.

Any advice on keeping either of these species? I have the generals down, food, caging etc. but any stories to help me out?

They live together, all 4 of them, but they always have -- they were originally taken from a "bird hoarder" who had 38 birds in her house and 18 were in their cages, dead. But these guys seem quite attached to each other -- and were quarantined since Oct.

They've moved into my mixed aviary -- it used to be a closet, but now has "dutch" doors and a lot of flying space. 7' long, 6' tall and 3' wide. No other finches in there, just my 3 very sweet cockatiels and a ringneck dove.

Any advice?

Thanks!
RW

Hey RW, I would watch your mixture of softbills with hookbills. Hooks tend to naw on things a bit more than softbills do...like softbills toes, beaks, etc. Keep a close eye on your softbills for any injuries. Finches need a well balanced diet like your hookbills of daily veggies, pellets, seeds, protiens etc.. Throw in some meal worms for them and you have yourself some happy birdys.
