I was looking at my canary today and his nails looked a little long. How long should they be before I trim them.

Their nails should only be just a bit past the "quick". If they are any longer than that then trim away. Just be sure you have flour handy in case of an accident and a towel too!
You can also look at the birds feet while they're perching. If their toes turn kinda sideways then their nails are too long. If you've never trimmed their nails before I would take your bird to the vet and let him/her show you how to do that and trim your birds wings as well. It's not hard but always good to have someone show you how to do it properly.
