How do you tell the difference between male & female canaries besides the singing.
My canary was supposed to be a male, but I found out differently when "he" laid an egg!! By then, I was much too attached to take her back and get a male. Her song was so sweet, and I really enjoyed listening to her.
I've had canaries who were supposed to be males and didn't sing at all. Later, it turned out they were sick and had no energy to sing.
I think the "egg will tell" who's who, but then not all females will lay eggs!! The volume of the song is really reliable. Males will sing louder. One of my male canaries could sing louder than the vacuum cleaner. A female, if she did sing, would not be that loud.
