??Do finches need gravel in cage???

angieburchell Mar 15, 2006 11:49 PM

My mother just got two baby finches and was told that you have to put gravel on the bottom of the cage to help them digest there food. Does anybody know if this is true? I have looked on the net but have not found any info about this as of yet. I do not know much info about them..the only bird I have is a cockatiel and they are nothing like finches.

Since finches are seedeaters, they tend to husk out the actual seed from the outside and don't need the grit in their stomach to do that work. Some vets say that grit and gravel can cause impaction in their digestive tracts.

I have gouldian finches.
