Zebras Eating Their Own Eggs?

pushtoowala Oct 02, 2006 10:56 AM

I have been having this problem with my zebra finches since I got them. Every time they lay an egg, they eat it right away. It doesn't make any sence because I give them eggfood, crushed egg shells and calcium grit. I also feed them fresh fruits and vegatables. I even give them extra vitamins in their water. I have tried to take the eggs out after each one is layed and then put them back after three are layed and they seem to incubate for a while but then they eat them. It seems to me that the female is the one eating the eggs. Should I take out the eggs as I have been doing and then put them back and take out the female and leave all the work to the male or will that not work out. This makes no sense to me and I am desperate for any help. Please help me.

of low calcium. How often is she laying eggs? Have you considered giving her a serious break by removing the nest for several months? Does she actually eat the eggshells or any other calcium source that you are giving her?
