Zebra Finches

brunste Jun 14, 2007 01:21 PM

Rightio, so I purchase four beauties of Finches. 3 males, and one female, it's been rocking good, no problems as of yet.

They built a nest (I provided the wool) but the female wouldn't go near the bloody thing, so I emptied it's contents in the trash, and let them build their own, with what I provided (Loo paper, burlap, dry grass, cotton, etc) They immediately took home to it, and the female has laid four eggs in four days.

I am worried about two things, if some help could warrant.

1: She is layin' an egg per night, each morning there is another eggs in the nest, she hasn't eaten any(eggs), so it's a good sign she likes her cuttlebone.
2: Theres two males that accompany the nest, Jim, and William, they both tend the eggs as if they were their own, while she usually chills on the perches, (she does go in for approx. 4 hours a day), but the two males are more previlent. (sounds like a Maury Povich spin-off "You are not the father!" But, I'm worried that once the eggs hatch, that Jim And Bill (get it?) will fight over who's the dad.

Also, at night, all four of me finches all cram themselves into the nest, which don't bother me none, but is that normal?

I think honestly that Jim is the father, cause I done what seen him mate with the female.

Would I need to seperate them? Also, I've been growing millet for my Cockatiels, and I (since the female laid) have been grinding up the finches some, is that okay?

Also...Sparticus (the third male) is still doin' his mating call (which by the way is 3 seconds long, and is just a cash register ringing in[drives me nuts])so...

I guess the real question here, is is it okay to just let them do as instinct tells em? Or should I interfere, and move Jim, and the lass out into another older-smaller cage.

Cheers,
Brunste.

you stated that they 'didn't eat the eggs". why do they eat the eggs? what is that a sign of? i started with 4 finches and to date have 9 adults and i hear another baby peeping inside their nest.

they all cram inside their nests too. the more the merrier evidently. i have an extra nest there figuring they wouldn't have to cram, but i guess that's par for the course for finches. i have society finches.

Shucks, I didn't know that they cram in the nest, uhh. I would figure they ate their eggs in self defense, Y'know, they see us as a threat, so they destroy the eggs?

Goodluck with you finches...(still looking for an answer.)

i'm still learning too. i keep the same routine every morning, feed at the same time, change the paper on the bottom of the cage the same time, yet every single time i do this, they think i'm going to kill them and they fly around and around. you'd think they'd say, "oh well, it's that time again. she'll leave soon." nope.

but it's so nice to hear them singing.

good luck, and i hope you get your answers. i'll be watching too, and hopefully get some answers too.
