Zebra Finches

smiklich Jul 24, 2007 09:01 PM

I have 3 finches (2 female 1 male). They seemed to get along ok.
They all sleep in the nest together at night. Tonight I saw that the male and female (that obviously bonded) are picking on the 2nd female. They wouldn't let her near the nest and the female was chasing her around the cage. Should I get another male? And if I do how do I know that the left out female is who he will bond with? I am confused.....HELP!!

If you are keeping three finches together and want to reduce aggression, I would suggest getting that nest out of there! Zebra finches can be very aggressive to each other. You might have to separate the two from the one and then get one more for the single finch.

How are they doing now?

I did get another male for a total of 4. They seem to be ok. The 3 still sleep in the nest.
The new male sleeps on the perch. He seems to not put up with anything as I've seen him pecking at the others....nothing like before. I have noticed the original 3 will fly all around the cage...from perch to perch to perch and he just sits there watching them. Does this mean anything?

than they are? or maybe he is lazier than they are? Hopefully it isn't that he is sick.... By the time that you realize a bird is sick, it can be too late to help. They are excellent at hiding sickness, as a sick bird is a dead bird in the wild. I am not very knowledgeable about zebras, other than the normal aggression, keeping pairs together, nest aggression, etc., because I have never had any zebras. But I do keep gouldian finches, so I have SOME finch knowledge. Sorry. I was hoping that someone else would respond to this post, but no one did, so I thought that maybe I could help a bit.
