What to do with the babies

rntx22 Sep 03, 2007 02:16 PM

Hi, I'm a new zebra finch owner. I got the birds (a male and female) as a gift and made the mistake of putting a nest in their cage. Shortly after, lo and behold they laid 4 eggs but only one hatched. The baby is now out of the nest eating on its own and its beak has begun to turn orange. I know I need to seperate the baby from the parents, but I only have one small cage and live in a small apartment with no place to put more cages.

I don't want to breed my finches; I just read here that I need to take the nest out to stop them. Well guess what, they have already laid more eggs!! I can't believe it. What on earth do I do with the babies? No one I know wants birds; I don't have an interest in trying to sell them, I just want to get them to a good home. Do pet stores like Petsmart take birds?? Help!

You can either throw away the eggs they laid or wait for them to hatch them. The big pet stores usually can't take birds from anyone but a USDA certified breeder. You can put up an ad on your local craigslist or just spread the word.
Hope this helps.
