Found an egg inside the cage today.....

repaddict Oct 13, 2004 07:41 PM

Today, I noticed an egg on the bottom of my tiels cage. I have no idea if its fertile or not. I'm just wondering what i should do now? Although I was planning on breeding them I'm not prepared right now, I have no nest box for them. Should I leave it in there or take it out? Their only about 9 months old now, although their capable of breeding at this age isn't it unsafe to breed them this early? Thanks for any help.

I would leave the egg where it is. Don`t provide a nest box until you`re really ready to start breeding. You can rearrange the perches and toys in the cage to try to discourage her from laying more eggs... The female and male share a cage? Since it might be fertile, and you`re not ready to breed them yet (and young little mom doesn` need the strain of raising chicks) I`d recommend freezing the egg for 24 hours, marking it with a marker, letting it come back to room temperature, and then putting it back in the cage where you found it. This`ll prevent eggs from hatching this time around.
