New carpet question

Tesscinder Oct 25, 2004 09:45 AM

Hi,

I don't have a bird yet. I am thinking about getting a cockatiel. First, we need to put some new carpet on the stairs and hallway in our house. How long should we wait after getting the new carpet before bringing a bird into the house? Is there any rule of thumb? Thanks.

Sincerely,

Kathy

I've never heard of any rules reguarding new carpetting.

It must be the chemicals you're worried about?

I'd say give it a day or two.

Thought you should know that I was merely guessing.

A lot of it depends on the carpet itself. When I've had carpeting work done, I've tried to buy it well in advance of having it installed, and had it stored in either the carpet warehouse or my barn so that it could do a lot of off=gassing before bringing it into the house.

A friend of mine is horribly chemically sensitive, so this is something that I've been made aware of. I myself have some dust allergies, so I went with hardwood floors and washable cotton area rugs.
