Help with - Cockatiel Treats and Fruits&Vegetables

FEESE Nov 20, 2004 01:55 PM

I was wondering if anyone here could share some of the treats their birds like to eat once in a while.
Also, what are the best and most enjoyable fruit and vegetables for cockatiels.
I have a 4 year old female cockatiel mainly on a seed diet but would like to give her more variety .

THANKS!!

Well I can tell you what my tiel likes.

She loves whole wheat bread! LOVES it!

She likes cooked beans.

Fresh kale, brocolli and corn and peas.

There is so much more you can give them but they are picky about eating new foods. You may have to put it in their cage many time s before they even take an interest in it.

Also with wet foods don't keep them in more than an hour or two because the bacteria can grow and kill them if they eat it.

I've recently discovered my little freaks like grilled salmon & herby cous cous with a yoghurt dressing. (they lapped up the leftovers!)

Also red peppers, spinach, tangerine, brocolli, and rice crackers

Carrot tops and fresh dandelion leaves. 'Pet grass' sold in pet shops and now some grocery stores, which is sprouted oat, barley, or wheat grass are high nutrition and that they like to chew up. Broccoli florets. White Dutch clover blossoms were popular too.

Other non-seed/grain based treats have included sun-dried anchovies or sardines bought at an Asian food shop, and a totally non-food item that was well loved were pieces of plain, undyed balsa wood from the hobby shop that they could tear to pieces. Shredders, which is plain palm fronds woven into a braid are very good non-food treats.
