I have a question.....about cockatiels chewing things

kevinBD1 May 01, 2005 03:35 PM

my tiel was w/ me when i was doing my homework today, and decided to take a chunk out of my eraser, she chewed the chunk and just let the pieces fall onto the table, is there any chance that she would have swallowed any of that eraser, and if so would it be very harmful??

I of course couldn't guarantee it but more than likely they would not have ingested a large enough quantity to be harmful. Just make sure to keep it out of reach in the future since although I am not certain about the hazards of an eraser I know the lead in a pencil can be toxic if ingested by a bird in certain quantities. If you are going to have your bird out while using a pencil it might be helpful to find a "stick" about the same size and shape as the pencil and if your bird shows interest in your pencil give him/her their own "fake pencil" to chew on. It might keep them from having as much interest in yours. If all else fails pretend to use the fake pencil and it will make it even more exciting! LOL!
