Ionic Air Purifier and Ozone emission ok for birds?

nymph May 09, 2005 06:44 PM

I am thinking about getting an Ionic Air Purifier however they emit minimal amounts of ozone. This causes no problem for humans but what about birds?? Does anyone know? Thanks

I have 12 cockatiels. I just bought an Ionic Pro air purifier (the cheaper version of Ionic Breeze). It has been running in the bird room for about 2 months. Before buying it, I did some research about safety for birds, but they claimed it was safe. So far, I have not noticed any negative effects on my tiels.

I am somewhat satisfied with the effectiveness of the Ionic Pro. It does filter out the small dust particles, it's nice to see all the dust I'm NOT breathing in. But it doesn't clean the air of the larger dander particles and fluffs. The air seems cleaner, but surfaces in the room are still dusty.

When the metal plates need cleaning (almost daily), it starts to make this electric hissing sound. It is annoying, but it is still much quieter than my other hepa filter.

I do really like the faint scent of the ozone. It makes the whole room smell like clean air after a rainstorm. I was worried at first that the ozone emmision may be bad for the birds, but it is only a few parts per billion, and so far my birds seem fine with it.

I am interested to hear if anyone has tried the Ionic Breeze, I wonder how the two units compare. Ionic Pro was only $150, while Ionic Breeze is $350.

Personally, I get another filter. From what I`ve heard that ionic filters aren`t actually all that effective. And what with them carrying warnings that they might not be suitable for people with comprimised lungs, I would worry about my birds.
