is a cockatiel for me?

mishy Aug 14, 2005 01:49 PM

i have been wanting a tiel for a long time and have read alot about them. recently i have been really craving one and have been reading even more. the only thing im worried about is noise. if my bird were to sing and chirp and whistle a bit that would be fine. consant noise might get on my nerves though. i found a website with alot of frequently asked questions about noise, most of them seemd to be due to not geting enough atention or mating. id be able to give my tiel maybe 4 hours or more of antention every day. and hopefully have the cage close to where i am alot in my room. with all this atention (and id give them a big cage with ALOT of toys for sure) could i still have a noise problem? thanks

Tiels are known for their shrill cry when they want your attention.

I have a tiel. I have had her for four years. I live in a small apartment and I will admit her noise does get to me. I am here most of the day. If you live in a large place where you can get away from the sound once in a while that would be ideal.

The key to giving attention is to do it consistently. Even if you have 4 hours a day to give to your bird I would not do that right now because if your schedule changes and say you have to switch to 2 hours a day you are going to get a lot of loud complaints.

Feeding them well is also a key to keeping the noise level down. They can live to be 15 to 20 years old. That's a huge commitment.

ON the other hand they are very sweet birds. Charming.

well sadly i have changed my mind. my schedule changes constantly! there would be alot of days where i could give it lots of atention but some days where i wouldnt even have time for myself. maybe in a few years when things are different i will be able to get one.
