bird sitting.......maybe sick bird

schellross Aug 22, 2005 05:28 PM

Hi, I am watching a couple of cockatiels for a friend of mine and have not owned a cockatiel for a number of years, but one of them seems to puff up alot, practacly all day. she still eats and drinks, she's active for the most part. I had her on my shoulder for a few hours today seems content. she preens and just doesn't really act sick. but she has sneezed a few times and the feather puffing has got me worried. she has also taken a couple of naps today. I can't remember if that is normal behavior. I would be grateful for some advice before I worry my friend on vacation.

Puffing of feathers alone is not necesarily because they are ill. It could be that its a little colder in your home and she is cold. Make sure she is not in a draft. She may have an allergy to something in your home too. Or is she still in your friend's home?

There is no doubt that they are probably stressed missing your friend. Just keep a close eye on both of them. Does their poop look normal?

If you notice that they are acting weak or not eating or drinking then its time to worry.

naps during the day are normal.

Thank you,

They are at my house and we do keep the air pretty low, I am not sure what temp my friend keeps it. I just turned it down to see if that helps. So far I think their poop looks normal (I think)
I had my cockatiel for years and thank goodness he never did get sick, so I am lost with the signs of illness. I am just trying to remember the things he did and didn't do, and not hit any panic buttons.
I had forgotten what a joy a cockatiel is.

Yes it is probably a matter of temperature. I know my little girl puffs up and sneezes when she is cold.

When she's hot her feathers go flat and she pants.

Anyway, I can see why your friend chose you to baby sit!!
