cage bottom

mishy Oct 19, 2005 04:03 AM

i bought this cage today for 2 tiels im picking up in a few days. the bottom has 2 pull out trays. one is an actualy plastic tray and one is wire. id rather not keep the wire bottom in there. i plan to use newspaper for the bottom and im pretty sure the wire would get poo all over it so then id have even more to clean. will the wire serve any purpose or is it ok to take out?

does it sit over top of the plastic one, with a small air space between it? I leave my grate over top, because I don't want my bird getting down and eating the newspaper, or getting into his fecal droppings or old food.

the wire is usually in the smaller & larger bird cages, not medium size ones. It's there so the mess drops through to the bottom & the birds don't walk in it. My cocky cage has a grate at the bottom also but I pull it out because I don't particularly like it & cockies do like to forrage on the ground occationally. It's upto the indevidual whether they want the grate in their or not. You don't have to leave it in if you prefer not to. It's personal preferance.

If you can keep your cage very clean changing papers once to twice a day then it would not be a problem whether you took the grate out or left it in. If you are not going to be able to keep up that type of cleaning schedule (which hopefully you will) then definitely leave the grate in. Walking and foraging in its fecal matter and old food or seeds would be definite invitation to parasites and bacteria.
