Need advice about getting a bird

buns752000 Jan 03, 2006 12:39 PM

I am a newbee to the bird world so I need advice in getting a cockatiel.
My sister's friend has four of them and I was suppose to get a baby from her. The baby died before I got it, so the woman said I could have my pick from the last ones born (last spring '05). These birds are a little older then the one I was supposed to get. Is this bird age too old to be trained to be people friendly? The one she is offering me lives in the same cage with the parent birds and another sibling and have not been finger trained or worked with at all. I really want a (one) bird that I can play with and will except me enough to be placed on my finger and shoulder. Are birds that are almost a year old able to be trained to do this?
Thanks for any advice,
Maureen

Birds of almost any age can be trained to accept a human. The main thing is that it takes more patience and a lot more time to get them to accept you. If you are patient and work at it you could still have a wonderful feathered friend. My advice would be to get a book on parrot training and parrot behavior to help you understand the best way to work with it to get it to accept you. If you have any questions let us know and we will help in any way we can.
