loving bird now monster

josieanne Jan 08, 2006 02:48 PM

Please help. I have a male 1 year old tiel who I love dearly but don't like very much at the moment. it started 3 weeks ago. he just suddenly started attaking my 11 year old son for no reason. he was very vicious and drew blood, he would not stop attaking as in launching himself towards us full claws ready and beak to harm when my partner intervined he attaked him too.
the next day, willow was quite calm and sat on my shoulder his usual place, he seemed fine and then he bit my face twice drawing blood, he refused to get off my shoulder, and I had to push him off. For the rest of the day, he either kept flying to attack me or wooing my feet, however if I moved he attacked again. This has been going on for three weeks now and i am sore and at my wits end, i daren't let him out now, which isn't fair to him. any suggestions on how to get my willow back will be appreciated. he was a very loving bird and is now a monster. he is still eating/ drinking/ grooming okay.thanks

might be hormones but I can't say for sure, how do his droppings look?
did anything change recently(diet/cage/where the cage is)?

Although I haven't heard of it as much in cockatiels as in some larger birds some birds do get aggressive when hormonal as Rouen said. You could get a vet check to see if anything else is wrong. Sometimes a change in cage, the addition of new toys etc will give them something else to vent on. Also put him back into the cage at the first bite and do not take him out for a little while until he seems to calm. This way if he likes being out he will "hopefully" learn that biting means he has to go back in and good behaviour lets him be out to play.

Thanks,
his droppings haven't changed he's still eating and seems to be okay in every other way, we wondered if it was the xmas tree lights that sent him funny, but they have been gone for a while now and he's still being a monster. I still talk to him all the time and stand next to his cage, but he is still looking ready to attack. still lost, still need help...

I'd try a vet, someone was in chat about a week ago saying thier bird was acting strange, they took it to the vet, after testing it's droppings they found the bird has chronic kidney disease.
