Baby Cockatiels

triple_t Feb 15, 2006 09:19 AM

Hi all,
I have a couple of questions.
My cockatiels have started hatching out and I wanted to know is there any certain temperature I need to keep my house?
Also, when do they start wanting to eat? What should I be adding to the parents food to help them feed their babies? I cooked some veggies and pasta and blended it just about an hour ago and added it to their cage. I read that soft foods were a must. From everything I've gotten from their previous owner, they were only given seed and must have raised the last babies on that alone. I have their seeds, dried fruit & veggies, pellets, millet, plus the fresh veggie/pasta mix. If I'm doing wrong please let me know asap.
I know the parents have raised at least two different clutches, they were given to me by a friend who didn't have time for them any more.
I have a couple of different recipes for hand feeding babies plus I just went out and bought the baby formula if needed.
So far they have a little yellow looking one and the second is pecking it's way out.
That brings up another question, how long does it take for a baby to peck it's way out?
If you have any websites or knowledge I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much,
Mona

If the parents are raising them, not you, then they will look after them themselves, they'll know what to do. They'll feed the babies & keep the babies warm, you just sit back & enjoy watching them The usual foods you give the parents should be fine (seed, fresh veg, cooked stuff).

Kim,
Thanks for your information. I appreciate it alot.
I have a new question if you could answer it. How long does it take for a baby to break out of his/her shell? I had one this morning that was dead in it's shell. It had started pecking it's way out but I guess it just was to weak.
thanks again,
Mona

it can take a few hours to 48 hours, usually after 48 hours the chances of the chick surviving are slim to none, some chicks will die due to exhaustion.
good luck with your birds.
