Runny stool

herpsRkool Apr 09, 2006 05:32 PM

I have recently switched my cockatiel over from the seed diet to the pellets and everything seemed fine. He seems to be eating as much as before and seems to be just as active. But I have noticed that his stool isn't normal and am concerned.

Should I switch him back to the seeds or keep him on the pellets?

He has been eating Kaytee Exact brand pellets for about 2 weeks now. It is possible that something else is wrong and is unrelated to the diet change but i would like to hear what others think.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Is he eating any fresh foods like veggies or fruit? Are the pellets the colored or the natural colors?

Usually a change in diet will not cause runny stools. If they are eating a larger amount of fruits than usual or sometimes even more watery vegetables such as cucumbers and celery it can change the consistency of stools. Is your cockatiel a male or female? Many females develop loose stools before egg laying season even if they do not lay eggs.

There could also be an underlying sickness that is causing this problem but you would of course definitely need an avian vet to diagnose this. Some parasites, some viruses etc will cause loose stools.

I was told that he was a male when I bought him. I am feeding him the natural type of pellets. I know I should be giving him a diet that includes fruits and veggies but I have only been giving them as treats every now and then.

Thank you for all the help
