male cockatiel.

pajg Oct 26, 2006 03:53 PM

my family came into possession of two cockatiels today, one male and one female. As a newbie to cockatiels i am a bit concerned about the male who keeps pecking the female whenever she goes near him. they have both been kept together before in an aviary and we have them in a large cage. from what i've seen the male is quite a show off and quite noisy.
The female is very quiet and seems to be very timid. i just wondered if the pecking behaviour is normal?
thanks in advance for any advice.

hi,
well i think that maybe becuase they have been kept in such a large cage like an aviary and now have been moved into just a cage(large lke you said but not as large as the aviray) that they are just stressed out dont forget if these birds have been kept in a aviary there whole life and now been moved in a cage it is a big change, i think the reason for the male biting the female on the head is becuase he is stressed out and dosnt know were he is, give them time and they will both come around.

dont forget we are in breeding season and maybe the male wants to breed that is why he is becoming agresive to the female but if the female dosnt want to breed that is when the usuall agression towards eachother begin.

please dont quote me on any of these becuase im not sure if they are 100% correct, i am also new to cockatiels and have only recently began to have my first cluth of egss!

As said above it could be due to the stress of the move & going down in cage size. Exactly what size cage do you have?

Also have they ever bred before? Do you want them breeding? If not you should seperate them.

Please keep a VERY close eye on the picking & if you're ever unsure or the female is looking worse for the picking seperate them imediately until things settle down. They shouldn't really be kept together at all if one is picking the other.

thanks for the advice, since i posted last he is not pecking her as often so maybe you are right and it's down to the stress of the move.they were in an aviary with other birds and now there are just the two of them.
i will keep an eye on the situation.
thanks again everyone for the info.
