Got my cockatiels

AndrewJS Jan 28, 2007 08:17 PM

So I got my cockatiels, one is probally 5 months Male, and the other is 8 months female, I got the male before i got the female, and they seem fine after I introduced them, except a bit of minor fighting, between the two, the always perch togther and the male is tame enough I can get close and feed him spray millet to the point where he will acually climb onto my hand to get it. But since i got the female she will peck him if he eats millet from my hand, nothing hard, but it starts a squabble, the female wont eat millet by hand. and i havent seen her eat millet hanging yet but she might be. There both playful with the toys but I will look every so often and shes threating him. The female is the one from the pet store i spoke about earlier

Did you end up getting the stressed out, unhappy bird from the petstore? I thought it was a male. Or did you get the one you read about (on the internet I think). If you have the stressed out one from the pet store, you seem to be progressing quite well so far. I can't give you much advice on pairing problems because I only have one lone female who has always been loving and affectionate. I think it is quite a challenge/accomplishment to turn a stressed out, unhappy bird around.

I Got the Female from my store, shes a mean girl, but im working with her, And I didnt know how to sex cockatiels properley, and I found that she was infact female.
But I also got a younger Male from another pet shop and deffinatly better behaved, and gona be easyier to tame, Im going to buy a bigger cage for them, but untill i get both tamed Im going to keep the male in the new cage and the female in the one I bought.
The one i have now is 20x20x24, (a Living World (Hagen) Magestic "Motel", Its the cage that comes in the Delux start pack by Hagen)
The one I found isnt hagen, so sadly i cant get it orderd to my store and save money, But I belive its around 25x30x35 found at pet cetera.

Are you sure the 5 month old is male? You usually can not tell male/female until they're 6 months & over. Unless they've been DNA'd or surgically sexed.

Keep an eye on the minor fighting. They may get along or they may not. If you intend on housing them together you MUST get a much bigger cage. The one you said you are getting is not big enough for 2. They will eventually squabble over space. The other option is to get 2 smaller cages & house seperately.

Are you going to breed them? If not definitily house seperately.

They both do sound like typical pait behaviours, just watch them & if there is any incidence of injury happening, seperate imediately.

If you want to tame them, do it seperately also. In a different room where the other is out of sight. This will work especially for the female.

Some tiels don't like millet, my boy doesn't. It doesn't matter if they don't. It's not the healthiest seed so it's not important.
