New Chicks just hatched

jasperann Mar 19, 2007 11:10 AM

We have 2 Cokatiels and 3 eggs (2 now). We do not have a nest of any kind and did not expect the eggs to hatch. The hen (Fancy) has been nesting on them and taking care of them since she layed them. Sometime during the night one of them hatched. The baby seems to be doing good and both parents are taking care of it. But my questions are... first how is it possible that they layed the eggs and took care of them without a nest box and second is there a chance that the babies will live with out having a nesting box? We were not setting out breed the pair it just happened, and everything we have seen says that they would not breed without a nest box. My husband does plan on taking care of the babies and hand feeding them after extensive research and he is very good with all the various pets we have. Thanks in advance.

Just wanted to add that my husband has decided that he wants the parents to take care of the babies and then he will tame them. He has the experience with taming the birds so he would feel more comfortable with that. I think we are going to keep them. Do we need to have seperate cages for each one? Thanks again.
