Cockatiels and the handler

AndrewJS Mar 19, 2007 04:12 PM

I just got some questions, If u read my last post Tango my male is hand tame.
Now i got some questions, since i got him hand tame I let him out of his cage pretty much all day, it opens at the top so he can go in if he wants eay drink, he also has a food and water bowl on the shelf next to my computer screen,
First off how can u bond with the cockatiel, get him to like being perched on my finger, because right now he has full flight and I dont want to clip him if i can help it, He will sit on my finger and give me wondering looks but any other movment he will be up and flying to his cage or Charlottes , I can some times sit down at the computer with him but thats about it,

Are there any games u can play with a cocaktiel to keep it entertained?

You might find it easier to train if he is clipped. Once trained you can allow his wings to grow back.

Tiels can be notoriuos for being little buggers if they aren't clipped & a wing clip can often bring them down a peg or two.

Lots of reasurance & gentle persistance for stepping up, offer a treat when he's done this each time & make a big fuss over him when he has achieved this. A non clipped tiel will take double the time to train so if you insist on keeping his wings unclipped, expect his training to take longer, but it's not impossible to do at all.

Also no distractions of any kind, radio, TV, other birds etc while training. Train him as if it's strictly 1 on 1 in a room with a closed door.
