what tree branches are safe

Mybirds07 May 02, 2007 04:23 AM

Hello, I'm new to this site!!! I have 7 cockatiels & 3 more on the way...(one of my pairs are sitting on their fertile eggs in their nesting box)
I would like to make my own play gyms for my birds & perches but I need to know what trees are safe for cockatiels, that I could easily find in the forest. I do know that I have to disinfect the branches & let them dry out...Just not sure on what kind to get other then the apple trees.
At the momment I have used crab apple tree branches but I would like to add more I would like to make some perches for their cages.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Most fruit trees are safe although I would steer clear of cherry as the bark is said to contain some toxins. You can use pine, ash, apple, willow, mulberry, grape vine, birch, crabapple, dogwood, elm, fir, hazelnut, pecan, magnolia, manzanita, poplar, beech, cottonwood, and redwood. I am sure there are others but hope that helps for a start. Make sure you stay away from any that may have been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. You can disinfect with bleach or vinegar allowing to sun dry and then bake at a low temperature to kill all germs.
