Does this set up look ok??

seductivereptile May 04, 2007 06:51 PM

I have my two tiels in their cages now and I added an air cleaning machine to help with the dust, I am so allergic to dust and this is helping so much. Does this look like a good set up for them? Is there anything I need to add to make them happier?
Thanks!

As long as the cleaner doesn't have any kinda chemical stuff in or around it & none of it is made with teflon it should be fine.

Are they out of the cages often? They're small cages & if they tend to spend majority of the day in their cages, they'll need to be kept occupied with toys & a little more stretching & excersising room.

The cages are 24x18x32. I am at home most everyday, and I keep the cages open.. if they want to come out they can, the male is happier out and the female is happier in, most of the time. The female isn't responding to me as well as the male, he's in love with me. I have considered that the male was handfed and the female wasn't, she isn't social and prefers to stay away from me. I don't stress her, if she warms to me, great.. if not, that's fine, at least she likes him. She seems to be molting, so I am hoping that is the reason she is anti social. Whereas, the male will sit with me for long periods and watch tv or watch me on the computer, he also loves me to scratch his head.. a lot.

It sounds like you have everything under control with them.

I have heard from several people that the occasional female can be a little anti social compared to the male.

It looks fine to me. I notice that the front/back of the cages have vertical bars rather than horizontal, altho the side bars are horizontal which is good. My tiel loves to climb around in her cage and the horizontal bars are better for that. You may try another perch in each or a ladder, see if they like the variety. You can always remove it if they ignore. If you keep the doors open, it will be interesting to see if they "visit" each other or if they each stay in their own territory.

I have a ladder in the one on the left (his cage) and also a few others, including a cool toy I made from clean paint sticks that I bought, it isn't very easy to see from the pic, they are making good use of it. They do visit with each other and check to see if they both have the same thing in their food dishes, sometimes they put their heads together and peep, but the female will not let him preen her, he does try, then gets mad and nips at her. They also hang out on the cages and play with the lights on the air cleaner. They eat their eggs together every morning. If they don't get eggs they let me know they are not happy about it.
I have five smaller toys in the females cage, she stretches a lot more than the male, so I left her more space. I also made a huge ring that is wrapped with rope and has a perch, it now hangs from the ceiling from huge plastic links. The male will take water cracker off of it, that I wedge into the rope, but doesn't stay on it long, it's all an adjustment for them. I don't think they have ever had anything but Hartz type brand toys.. shudders. They love the new wooden toys that I bought and made for them, they love tearing them up. I do wonder if the female will ever be as happy as the male.

All my cages have vertical front & rear bars & horizontal sides. This is the norm for 99% of parrot cages. As long as they are horizontal on the sides & they have a couple of horizontals on the verticals (this supports the structure of the bars) there isn't a problem & they can still climb. My birds can climb theirs quite easily.
