feeding cockatiels while feeding babies

tikileahsmom Dec 03, 2007 10:56 PM

Hi all,
I"m new here and although I'm not a breeder, I have a pair of cockatiels on 5 eggs that may or may not be fertile. If they are the first one may hatch as early as this Friday which is 18 days after they started sitting on the eggs.
My question is what is good to feed the parents while I'm at work all day once the babies hatch? I have a rice, bean and pasta mixture with veggies mixed in and plan to give that first thing in the morning for a couple hours and then again in the afternoon. I want to leave something easy for them to feed the babies while I'm at work that won't spoil and harm the babies
I've heard whole wheat bread, dried egg food, nestling food and then of course some pellets and seeds. I also plan on leaving a fresh veggie mixture in since i'll only be gone about 6 hours.
Do any of these things sound ok or is there something better to offer them? The babies will be parent raised and I'll start handeling them around 10 days old to get them hand tamed.
Thanks for your help

Actually you have quite a good idea already of what to feed your birds. I am not sure I would trust vegetables in a bowl for 6 hours though but it would depend on the vegetable and the temperature etc in your home as to if they would spoil. Most people suggest leaving them for only 2-4 hours again depending on the type. If am not sure if you had it on your list but you can also mix in some hard boiled eggs, make birdie muffins with veggies etc in them (which is a good healthy food for them to feed their babies as well) along with the egg food, bean and pasta, veggies pellets etc. Good Luck!
