finding a breeder

thefiradragon Jan 12, 2007 11:26 AM

I currently live in minnesota. do any of you know of any good breeders in the area for a myers or jardines parrot?

also for those of you that keepthem, do you think that the internet discriptions of both birds ring true most of the time?

thanks

Ashley

Two years ago I adopted a Senegal. A lady on the next farm had had him for 7 years but could no longer give him the attention he needed. He is an absolute darling! Nutty, comical and totally in love with my son. When he hears my son's car pull in the driveway "Pepe Yuyo Honey Honey" starts fluttering his wings and hops from foot to foot. Anyone can handle him. The Honey Honey got attached to his name because if you call him that he will dance around in a circle.

As far as Pepe goes, the general information for Senegals is right on. I highly recommend this species. One thing though...Pepe is highly jealous of my grandson and will try to attack him or anyone small that he perceives as a child. However, this is just a personal quirk.

I would say that the internet descriptions of them fit probably nine times out of ten. Just like any animal they can have their own traits and personalities. Usually though if the description says they are quiet then they will be unless very stressed. Also most birds that are "family friendly" will stay that way unless given a reason not to be, that is if they are a well socialized bird. If it warns you that they are noisy then definitely expect it!

As far as the species you mentioned they are usually a quieter friendly bird although there will be exceptions to every rule. Expect a bit of a settling in time when they may be a bit noisier than usual or try testing you by nipping. This doesn't always happen but can occur. Also I don't know any breeders in your area but buying a young well socialized bird is definitely the right idea in getting a new pet. The second choice would be to go to a good rescue that actually works with their birds and makes sure they are ready both health and socialized for a new home! Good luck!
