Hi im Interested in getting an eclectus

PUREfantasy87 Jan 23, 2007 09:52 PM

Hi everyone! My name I Danie, and I Live in Florida.

I'm interested in getting a female eclectus and I had a few
questions before I take the plunge.
I understand that these birds need ALOT of attention and they need
time which I have but I was wondering do I need to get a male with
her? I've seen many pictures with owners having both male and female
I haven't seen one yet with just one...

How are they with other pets?

I read that the females are more comfortable in a family with a few
more people than the male? Is that true? My family is not big it
mainly consists of 5 people that are constantly in the house. Can
these birds travel I.E.- I take them to visit my grandpa the lives
about 25 minutes from me. I would like to visit him because he loves
birds and I think he'd appreciate the beauty of these magnificent
birds.

The breeder that I'm getting my baby from is a very clean place
that has sold many birds to Parrot Jungle. So I trust him he has
given me free clipping of wings and claws for the life of the bird
and if I go on vacation they will take care of her for me. I asked
them if air conditioning makes a difference because my family loves
the house cold we keep it on 69 we never change it and I do not want
my bird outside. But will this temp give my bird a cold? I know not
to keep my eclectus in direct draft but I'm still worried . . .

Potty training I read somewhere that it was easy to train these
birds but they didn't specify how I go along doing this?

What type of toys do they like?

Showers where do you u get the perch that has suction cups?

That's all for now I think. If you have any tips for me that you
would like to share I would love to hear it!

Yes they do require ALOT of your time as well as out of the cage time. To keep my eclectus happy, he has a plystand made from an old tree which he lives on. I have various toys & swings on the stand, in his cage & everywhere else in the house he likes to be, including interactive toys, plus a toy box he loves going through daily. This is all to keep him occupied.

People by pairs because they tend to fall in love with the first & get the other. They live well on their own. I have only 1 single male & my neighbour also owns one single male.

As any other pet regardless of what it is, they need to be introduced slowly, then you can see how things may work out. From a young age they grow up with the family pets which can be easier. But any new addition will be nervous of everything & everyone.

I take my ekkie out everywhere I go to socialize him well. He loves it & isn't afraid of any animal unless it's hyper, then he stays away. I have a tiel & cat also. He's a bit of a stirer when it comes to both of them. My tiel hates any other bird (thinks he's human) my cat is terrified of him!

I've never heard of famale being more comfortable in a larger family than male. I would presume it would more likely be male or female getting used to everything & being well socialized in & out of the home that would depend on how they react within the family.

Absolutely!! taking them travelling is a great experience for them. The younger you start this the easier it is for them to get used to it. Before you know it, they're chucking big saddies becasue you have to go out & you can't take them with you!!

Distance isn't a problem either. I travel to my sisters property approx 400km & my boy comes with me.

Not sure about the air con. They are tropical birds so can tolerate heat better than cold. It may also depend on the bird itself. My eclectus doesn't tolerate the air conditioner being on unless it's well over 100f. He really feels the cold & loves the humidity outside. 96f? That's only about 20c, that's actually quite cool. You may need to do a little more checking on that one.

Potty training is easy. Time their poops. When it's just about time to poo, take them to a stand, cage, over news paper & give a simple pooping command & stay their until the birds poos. Praise for doing so & continue every time. Allow more than one place to poo so there is no accidents from desperation.

My ekkie LOVES toys that make sound. ANYTHING that makes sound. Interactive toys, beby & todler toys & also a baby blanket with lots of things on it. A toy box is also a good investment.

I think if you look online you should be able to find those shower perches.

I would strongly recomend you do a thorough research on their diets as they have longer digestive tracts than other parrots & are very food sensitive compaired to other parrots, so, given in incorrect diet can cause health issues. Fresh food diet with high vit A is best for them. Pellets have a bad reputation for causing long term health probs in eclectus parrots.

Hope this helps!
