Question on importing

zetaphidiablo Oct 12, 2003 03:46 PM

I don't know if anyone here can help with this. I was wondering if anyone can explain to me what is all involved with being able to import reptiles...primarly pythons into the US. I would understand that you most likely need some sort of a permit, but what type and how many. Also general cost of doing it. If anyone could give me some general background on this process iw ould greatly appreciate. it is manyly a curiousity thing for me. Youcan responde or email me at shbrehob@hotmail.com

Thanks

A good public library should have the US Code of Federal Regulations. Go to the Fish and Wildlife Service portion of the Department of the Interior. That's where I found the regs some years ago when I wanted a look. Also check the list of Federal endangered species and the lists of snakes on Appendix I and II of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. These lists are also in the Fish and Wildlife section. I believe that some members of the family Boidae, like the Indian python, are classed as endangered by the US government. Some are also in CITES Appendix I, and all that aren't in Appendix i are in Appendix II. The regs differ depending on how a given species is listed. Good luck.
