Help! Amazon parrot

sarabean Mar 25, 2007 03:41 PM

Hi, I am a new owner of a 10 year old Blue-Headed Amazon. He is used to his old owner, and was able to step up on her, but I am having no luck. Granted, it's been only about a week. He lets me touch him to give his head "little scratches" and he seems to be in good health. He talks and seems happy, but it is harder than hell to get him into his cage, since he won't step up. When I try to have him step up from his cage, he squawks and hides from me. HELP! Any ideas??

Since he is in a new home he may only really feel safe in his cage. You will have to be patient and entice him to come out of his cage to you instead of trying to go in after him. Some can be quite protective of their space especially if they are in a new and "scary" place. IF you don't already know find out what his favorite treats are and try to get him to come out for them. You can also try getting him to step onto a perch but that only really works if they have been perch or stick trained otherwise the perch can scare them causing them more stress. If you have a t-stand try placing it right next to the cage with his favorite treat on it or in its bowls. make sure he sees the treat and let him climb onto the stand himself. Then you can move the stand away from the cage slowly and work from there.
