We recently finalized the adoption on Charlie, our Orange-winged Amazon.
We adopted him from Best Friends Animal Society. He is approx. 10 years old and was rescued from a local animal hoarder. She had kept him in a small cage with NO perches so he has some foot issues from hanging solely from the cage bars. His cage was NEVER cleaned (seriously, there was about 5 inches of waste on the bottom), and his diet was horrendous. Surprisingly, his only problems are the lack of tone in his feet, and some slight sinus problems from vitamin A deficiency. His attitude is wonderful. He is the silliest, sweetest, cuddliest (yes, he's CUDDLY!) amazon I have ever met.
We have only had him for about 2 months now, and already his feet are doing alot better (he is able to grip quite tightly), and his feathers are alot brighter. He has (or likes to think) quite a vocabulary so far, is quite picky AND piggish with his food, loves kisses and scritches, has learned how to play with toys (and how to destroy them), and follows me around like a puppy. Although I am his favorite, he only likes to take showers with my husband. He's really come a long way, and hasn't regressed at all. The main thing we're working on now is his cage dominance. We can bribe him to come out, but even then, it's a bit of a hassle. He is not agressive at all, but he gets so scared.
He really is our baby. Here are some pictures.
