Conures and other pets..

seductivereptile May 09, 2007 12:14 AM

I was wondering if anyone here can tell me how Conures react to other pets.. ie, dogs and cats. I am sure I am not the only one here that loves them all. If your Conure shares its home with other pets, I'd love to hear your experiences.
Thanks in advance!

My conure has a real jealous streek in her. We have a tiel & another parrot & a cat. She hates them all! Because she was the last to arrive in our family we've had to bring her down a peg or 2 when it came to the jealousy. It worked, she still hates our other pets but she has learnt to tolerate them & accept they're all here to stay & she is NOT the only one in the house who gets attention.

I think all conures have that jealous streek but you can get ones that are very laid back about other pets. It can also depend on their upbringing. My conures jealousy I believe comes from being in 2 previous broken homes where she lacked attention.

All birds are different & react differently to these sort of things.

I have had sun, jenday, nanday, and green cheek conures. I don't have any dogs or cats so I couldn't tell their reaction about those types of animals. As far as jealousy towards other birds this is something I just haven't experienced with them. Harley who is a green cheek conure did show jealousy when other "humans" got around her special person, she would click and screech and sound like she was giving you a good chewing out, LOL. I haven't had the others show jealousy though. We have separate playgyms and they will go visit each other, they don't fight although some do have behavior issues during breeding season and Kako (a nanday) does show great jealousy if any other bird gets near her food bowl. Other than those we work with conures all the time and I haven't seen the jealousy that others have said is common so I am guessing this is a single bird thing not an all species thing.

One of my suns, Charlie, can get VERY jealous if I'm giving attention to my other sun. But thats about it for jealousy.

They both go a little loopy and screechy when the neighbor kids or their dogs go past the front of the house, although I think thats more from excitement...

My youngest sun actually loves to watch one of my snakes...

I have a nandayas and she will actually call my cat "here Kitty Kitty Kitty." She seems to like the cat, my Cockatail, the kids and does not seem to mind the dogs. She does start to screech when the dogs bark but I think it is just because she gets exited, she also does this when the kids get to yelling.
