senegal or sun conure??

seductivereptile May 14, 2007 08:47 PM

I am torn between a sweetheart senegal and a equally sweet (loud) sun conure. My question is, do the senegals stay sweet or do they start biting as they age? If so, can anything be done to prevent it from turning out like that? He/she is young, born 12/06. Thanks in advance.

I would have to say the main decision maker on these two would be the noise. Many people cannot handle the screams of a sun conure on a daily basis and become annoyed with them, give them less attention etc. Senegals do stay much quieter. They may at times become loud but not usually at the volume of a sun conure and not for as long (I happen to love sun conures but the is just me LOL!)

As far as temperment. Sun conures can be quite gentle although many become nippy with breeding age. Senegals do as well sometimes show breeding nippiness although I haven't noticed it as much in them. If handled correctly, given lots of interaction, a good diet, and a variety of toys either bird should stay tame and make a good companion.

The noise is something that I might be able to live with, my family might kill me though lol. I will probably end up with the senegal but with a possiblity of conure later. Who knows, maybe someone will get tired of theirs and give it to me, and of course I won't be able to say no.. this is how I came to have two cockatiels. I have heard that conures can be trained to be quiet or at least controlled. They're awesome personalities probably make up for the bit of inconveinence of the sound. Thank you.
