New Baby Albino

CCappy175598 Oct 12, 2003 04:04 PM

I just bought a baby albino from petco. Shes pretty young, only about 3 inches in length and under 15g. They only had her there for a week so I knew she wasn't subjected to any petco shananagins and mistreatment. It was a grand opening sale so i thought Id stop in and I got her for 19.99. But thats besides the point. I want to make sure I do everything correctly with the little baby since all the other leos I've raised I aquired after they were older than 4 months.

So my questions; They were feeding all the babies meal worms so im assuming thats whats shes used to. Should I offer other things that may be smaller for her? My mealworms look rather large to fit in her tiny mouth. What can I give her that is small? She recently shed because i saw she missed a little spot on her head that i helped brush off with a q-tip. Her tail is a little skinny so what small item of food can I give her to fatten her up real quickly?

Ok thats all thanks in advance.

I'm so lucky to have a petco that is useful around me. They actually know what they're talking about! (sounds weird, eh?)

Anyways, how big is the baby?

well shes about the size of my index finger. Ill take a pic in a little while. she doesn't seem interested in the meal worms. but the person who helped me said that she feed them this morning so maybe shes full. I can see some feces in her tummy so i know shes been eating. shes really active. im lucky i found her in good condition.

I have raised two babies already, and am on my third right now. I fed Popeye and Boo mainly pin head crickets, and they grew like weeds. Handling crix that small can be annoying though, they are really hard to grab by hand. Popeye and Boo never had much of a problem catching them, and neither has Pumpkin. I tried to keep their cage as sparse as possible, less places for the crix to hide. If you don't want to deal with crix, mealies are just as good as previously posted. I don't Think you can get mealies that are labeled as "baby mealies", but just ask to see the size of them before you buy. My petco stores them in a fridge, so customers can just grab their own. I don't know if yours is like that. Well, I hope this helps you out some. If I can help out in any other way, feel free to ask.

Feed her baby mealies. Mealies are the best choice because they have a higher fat content than crickets but with nearly the same nutritional value.

I have a 4" baby leo, and I tried to pick out the smallest mealies I could find, but he still went for the biggest ones first. And he even took two at the same time. It was really cute, but now I know what size mealies he prefers.

so just pick the smallest mealies out or do i specifically order 'baby mealworms'?

I ordered small mealworms one time thinking they would last me longer, and they turned out to be too small. That was like a couple weeks ago, and they're still too small to do anything with. My baby leo goes for the medium size ones, but I think he's slightly bigger than your baby is.

when i get my baby 2 months ago he was very small and he ate large mealies no problem and medium crickets and grew very quickly so i wouldnt be worried if you get medium size mealies but have small crix as a back up

Shes doing great. She has shed again while I was out today and also left a little something on one side of the tank. The biggest suprise of all, though, is when i checked her food dish to find only 3 out of 9 mealworms left uneaten. this thing is a beast. I named her Layla.

Haha..
