TEFLON????

My husband and I lost 2 conures and 5 finch the other night. We are beyond devastated and want to find out what happened. They died from respiratory problems and it happened SO quickly. We are ALWAYS very careful when cooking, etc. We loved them like our children. We are not sure what the cause was. We used a Pampered Chef pizza stone for the first time since getting our birds. We also accidently turned the toaster oven on and there was an awful burning smell. Within minutes of eating our dinner and the toaster oven incident our finch starting dying and our conures were screaming. We immediately took them to the emergency pet care center but they were gone long before we got there. We are so heart broken and need to find out what caused it so that it never happens again. Please help.

I do not know if those specific items contain teflon but that is what happens when teflon is burnt. It will cause respiratory failure in birds usually resulting in death. Death caused by teflon or coated items can be instantanious or can be prolonged over a several day period depending on the exposure to the product. I know many cooking items have a coating that is very harmful to birds and can in some instances even be harmful to people. I am very sorry to hear of your loss. It doesn't sound like it was anything you did wrong just a horrible accident.

Make sure to always keep birds and other animals completely clear of the kitchen area. Try to keep the areas they are in very well ventilated in case the unexpected happens. Accidents can and do happen and can be quite devastating to the family involved.
