Mean lovebird

willardinps Sep 11, 2007 03:05 PM

I recently got two lovebirds. Both of them had nearly total black beaks and now have turned their typical yellowish color. One of the birds would torment and chase the other around the cage and pull at "his" feathers until he cried out. Everytime he went to eat, the other would push him away and eat instead. I have since separated them into different cages and in different rooms. But the mean one has instead taken to shredding the newspaper in the cage and runs around chirping like wild for the other, who is peaceful albeit a little somber by himself. What should be done for the other, was it a good idea to separate the two? I didn't want one killing the other. Is this behavior typical in birds so young?

You did the right thing in sepparating them. Some of the birds I work with do the same thing. Have you let the birds out of the cage to play on a playstand together? Sometimes parrots are weird like this, they do not want another bird in their cage, but are completely fine when they are out of the cage. Try letting them out on a playstand together, and see how they react.
