carmeny Dec 05, 2007 11:56 AM

I just checked my cage today (I checked yesterday when i fed them) and there are 3 eggs laying in the bottom of the cage!
What do I do? they are just laying on the bottom of the cage grate - do i build them a nest and can i handle the eggs? sorry I have no idea - we have had them for just over a year and this is the first time we have had eggs. any help is appreciated!

With the eggs being on the floor more than likely they will not hatch and are more than likely even infertile. If you are wanting to raise lovebirds then you can of course try placing them into a nest and see if the lovebirds will go in after them to care for them. I would instead suggest removing the eggs and replacing with "dummy eggs" (small wooden etc eggs to replace the real eggs) and disposing of the eggs that have been laid. If you just automatically remove the eggs and replace them with nothing more than likely the female will lay more eggs in a short matter of time which is quite unhealthy for them.

Hi Thank you! We didn't have a nest in there for them as we didn't expect them to lay eggs. I removed one egg as it was cracked and broken so there are two. I just checked on them and she is sitting on her eggs and he is perched beside her. I don't want to move the eggs into a traditional nest hooked on the cage - can i put a nest on the floor of the cage and move the eggs inside with some papertowel or something? Can i handle the eggs or gently move them with something else?

Although I am not interested in breeding - i would be interested to see if these eggs will hatch. Thanks!

I guess you could try the nest on the floor. Most if not all lovebirds will not stay in a floor nest. If you are really wanting to see if they will hatch I would still suggest the regular hanging nest just being careful when moving the eggs. But again as I said before you can always wait and see but usually eggs laid on the floor are either infertile or the birds will lose interest in them before it is time to hatch. Trying never hurt anyone though LOL! Touching the eggs will not make the bird stop sitting on them but it can excite the birds enough that they will accidentally break or damage their own eggs.

I have left her eggs on the floor of the cage as she is sitting on them alot. I will just see what happens. Thank you for your advice!
