Mangrove (Bioga dendrophila)

GRR Feb 08, 2003 02:14 PM

I am looking at getting a pair or Trio of Mangroves in the near future. I am wondering who out there Keeps and Breeds this beautiful snakes. I have breed many Nonvenomous species and am slowly working my way into venomous. The Mangrove is a snake that has caught my eye. I have been looking into them for about 2 years. When I go to a Reptile Show and ask Breeders about them I get a lot of different results. Some say the are just a problem snake and they are not worth working with. Also that the are one of the more difficult snakes to breed. Then on the other hand I get a few that say the are great and they do have problem feeders but you can get around that with some of the common methods of feeding problem feeders.

I do not see that many CB Mangroves on the market. So is there any methods that have worked better or have not worked at all with your snakes. If you have breed your Mangroves, how did you go about it and what was you success rate?

Thank You in advance.

Most captives on the market will be captive born from gravid imports vice captive bred from breeders stock. Some do breed them so check often with the dealers that import them and question many of the breeders who might lead you to find them. There was one guy out of VA Beach who bred them in the past, but I cannot remember his name, although if you keep an eye out on the venomous classifieds he may post this spring with more babies. In any case, if you go with a wild caught, only get one that has been a long term captive that has been medicated, and is feeding well and gaining weight. Oh, and specify which kind you want as there are many black/white's floating around out there and if you want a black/yellow, be sure to ask for it.

Thank you for your repley. I have noticed there are alot of WC adults floating around out there. When I call 80% of these animals are not guarantied to eat. I want to add a pair to my projects but like you said there is not much info on breeding this snakes. I will keep an I out for the guy you spoke of. When I get my snakes I will be sure to posts pics but it may be awhile because I am very picky when it comes to an animal getting added to my collection.

And it is the Black and Yellow I am interested in. I just hope I can do my small part in CB these beautiful snakes.

All I can say is good luck finding a c.b. mangrove of any color for a decent price. I realize w.c. animals are always going to be (or should be) cheaper than imports, but the one or two c.b. mangroves I've actually seen were rediculously priced. Anyway, very true about the difficult feeding w.c. specimens. I had 1.1 black and yellow mangroves a couple months ago, adults, w.c., and they were a nightmare to try and get to eat. They only wanted rat fuzzies, but wouldn't even so much as look at a mouse or even larger rat (these mangroves were both well over 4'). And as far as breeding, again I'll say good luck. That was originally my intentions, but I decided to persue more attainable goals, and I was just tired of trying to get the things to eat, much less copulate. It's not impossible though, but be careful, mangroves can be cannibalistic and may be more than happy to make their first captive meal out of their mate. Good luck though!

Thanks for the info Chance

I am not set on buying CB for my project but I am real picky on the snakes I will buy. If I come to find a great female that is eating I will buy here(after alot of questions to the owner) and I would wait for months if I had to to find a male. Like you said first is finding a healthy pair before I think of breeding them.

Sorry to here about your pair not working out. I have kinda the same problem with a female JCP. All she will eat is mice no matter what I do. She is close to 7 foot and she should be on a larger prey item but she says no.LOL She is a great breeder but she costs a tone to feed with me having to buy more mice for her.

Thanks again!

I have heard that if you put Hide spots off the ground that this helps this species with some of its feeding problems. I am not sure since I have not owned this species before. But the guy told me that they need to hide in the canopy of the cage. Which I knew they liked tall cages but until this guy told me this I never thought of hide spots off the ground for this species. Just thought I would get some views on this.
