ducklings

A mallard nested next to our pool and 6 ducklings were born today. They immediately went into the pool so I put a long board in so they could climb out. They were swimming around in and out of the pool for a few hours....then the mother left with the ducklings. Will she return or was she just using this area by the pool for nesting?

I'm sure she will return, duck parents leave their young but return later (which is why they say its bad to take a seemingly "abandoned" duckling. chances are, it isnt abandoned, just alone temporarily)

Well both the mother and the ducklings left...at only a few hours old are they able to walk far? I know there's not much other natural water areas around where I live.

I wouldn't worry about them, as long as in your area people care when they see ducks crossing the road Thats what they make duck crossing signs for, is the cruitial moments of trying to find a permenant home. The mother has to take her babies across roads, etc, until she finds a nice pond or lake to settle down in.
