Raising Swans

ducklover Dec 21, 2004 10:53 AM

Hello,

I am thinking about raising a couple of swans in the Spring time to grace our 2 & 1/2 acre pond but am curious if anyone has any experience raising them and in particular experience with how they do during their first winter or cold months?

This time of the year where I live the pond is frozen and typically will be for the next month or so. I currently have several ducks (Pekins, Buff and Mallards) that have their own duck house and pen who I let out to free roam during the day.

Do I do the same thing for Swans (only build them a bigger duck/swan house or do they prefer to build their own natural nests along the pond banks for the winter)? I know most likely you probably can't keep ducks and swans together in the same housing arrangment.

Hey

WoW! Your so lucky having a pond and all that space.
To be honest i've never had anything to do with swans, only ducks. I agree that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to keep them all in the same housing at night.
If no one else replys to this message, i'd suggest that you contact any local experts, such as Animal Welfare organisations, Rescue Centers, and Waterfowl Clubs.. these are just a few examples. But make sure you do plenty of research, and get information from several different sources, as just one may be incorrect.

Anyways, i hope you find everything out.
Good luck, and have a nice Xmas!
